'Daughter Wanted' Ad
Draws 100 Replies
An
old farmer and his wife in Wuhan province could use some help with their chores.
Actually that's not true at all. It's only what the photo would have you
believe. In actuality, a retired university professor and his wife in
central Wuhan have posted an ad for a daughter to look after them in their old
age. After Tian Zhendong and Ding Shuhui's son emigrated to Canada, the old Chinese couple
felt "lonely and lost," according to a Reuters story Tuesday.
Over 100 women have replied to the ad. While they
visited their son in Canada, they preferred the Chinese lifestyle. And
after six years of loneliness, the couple decided to search for a "daughter."
The soon-to-be father told the Guangzhou Daily, "We are not looking for a
maid, but someone to be with us until we are dead." And as stipulated
in the
ad, the "daughter" will receive an apartment after 3 years of service.
With many Chinese of working age flocking to cities for jobs and higher rates of
emigration, many older Chinese couples are left in a similar predicament.
Tian and Ding will announce the winner of the daughter search this week.
Personally, I think it would have been cool if they had announced the winner via
satellite from the Golden Globes. But whatever.
