Student Sex Survey
Surprises Specialists
It's
one of the great mysteries of China. Are the young people here having sex?
Tradition in China is to wait until marriage before doing the deed. Sex is
seldom a topic of conversation here the way it is in most other places.
And often, the Chinese become nervous when the subject arises. But as I've
talked about quite often on this site, the new generation of Chinese, living the
city life, driving new cars and wearing designer clothes tend to flout the
ideals of China's past. And it seems as well, the distinct Chinese values
governing sexual activity are rapidly being redefined. A survey conducted
by the Beijing Sex Health Education Research Center
concluded that the city's middle and high school students are getting it on, and
at a much earlier age than parents and educators believed. According to a Xinhua report
Thursday, of the 2,300 students polled, 6.2% had claimed to have gone all the
way. That doesn't sound so bad. But hang on. More than 40% of
the students who admitted to having danced the horizontal polka said that they
had done so for the first time without using contraception. And 30% of
youths said that teenage boot-knocking is okay as long as it is consensual.
My favorite finding from the Beijing survey, however, is that of 1,300 girls polled, only
6 of them gave a definitive "no" when asked whether or not their boyfriends bug
them for sex. 6 out of 1,300! And while the global average age for
losing virginity is 17.3 years, the average age for those highschoolers in
Beijing is 15. Well, I must say, I'm kind of baffled. If the results
of the survey were obtained through honest responses and not peer pressure, then
I must admit, my instincts are about as far off as the pants of the over 50% who
responded that one-night stands were acceptable. It's also hard to imagine
that with so much promiscuity, there is no sex education in China's schools.
I'm not sure that when teachers encourage their students to learn by doing, they
mean it like this.
