Foreigners Face New
Driving Rules
Fellow
foreigners of China, this is a blessing in disguise. The government passed
new regulations Wednesday limiting foreigners' ability to drive in China.
What amounts to China's leaders being terrified of foreigners driving during the
Olympics, all foreign drivers must now hold liability insurance, automobile
safety certificates and inspection certificates before getting behind the wheel
in China. Also, foreigners will only be permitted to drive on certain
roads in China and will have a given number of days before their foreign
licenses expire. These new rules will not hinder the ability of Olympic
personnel to move around freely during the Olympics. Rather, it will limit
the mobility of Al and Barbara from Ohio who think that driving in China
isn't the fucking death sentence it is and rent a shitty old Volkswagen for the
Olympics and get rear-ended when they stop at the first red light.
According to a China Daily article Wednesday, in 2005, vehicles operated by
foreigners led to 28 deaths and 90 injuries. Not surprising. Not
because foreigners are bad drivers. But seriously, I'll say it again,
driving here is like Russian roulette. In America, there is a harmful,
hurtful stereotype about Asian drivers to which there is no truth. But if
it were true, imagine a whole country full of those drivers. The new rules
take effect New Years Day.
