Rosie's Racist Rant Targets
Chinese
Last Thursday, attention-starved host of "The
View," Rosie O'Donell got herself in a bit of trouble when she did an impression
of Chinese people speaking Chinese. Rosie was discussing Danny DeVito's
drunken visit to the show days earlier. DeVito, who starred in the
Flumesday favorite "Throw Momma From the Train", showed up to the set of "The
View" completely sloshed after a night of drinking with fellow actor George
Clooney. In describing the surprising level of international news coverage
of DeVito's drunken interview, O'Donnell said, "The fact is that
it's news all over the world. You know you could imagine in China it's
like 'Ching chong, ching ching chong, Danny DeVito ching chong chong, ching
chong drunk, The View, ching chong'" The gossip hounds in the audience
then applauded wildly. Here is the video, care of Gawker.com:
The Asian American Journalists Association fired back at Rosie saying:
We consider this a mockery of the Chinese language and, in effect, a perpetration of stereotypes of Asian-Americans as foreigners or second-class citizens. The use of the distorted phrases is insulting to the Chinese and Chinese-Americans, and gives the impression that they are a group that is substandard to English-speaking people.
Unbeknownst to Rosie, here at
Flumesday, I've been learning some Chinese. And what Rosie said, with the
proper tones, translates to this: "I'm fat, I'm fat, not even Danny DeVito
would consider having sex with me, even if he was drunk on 'The View'.
This is the sort of Chinese analysis you can't get anywhere else on the web.
Rosie's publicist said unapologetically, "She's a comedian in addition to being
a talk show co-host. I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp
her humor." Uh, they, being the Chinese, are probably the last
people on Earth that would find Rosie O'Donnell's humor funny. Although,
they do find fat people pretty amusing.
