China Pulls Plug On T.V.
Sex
It's
official. Chinese television is now the polar opposite of American
television. China's State Administraion of Radio, Film and Television
announced over the weekend that extramarital sex, porn and violence would be
purged from all Chinese television broadcasts. Before I continue, I must say
that in my short time in China, I have never seen any porn on Chinese
television. And trust me, I've looked. The Chinese deputy director of TV
drama, Wang Weiping, told a censorship conference in Chengdu that China
"will make great efforts to straighten out TV programs. Local TV stations
will be severely punished if their programs are found to contain vulgar
content." This measure is part of an overall effort of the Hu Jintao
administration to tighten the vice on freedom of expression and media
content. Hu has made no mistake about it, as long as he's in charge, TV is
gonna suck. And especially for foreigners. There is only one English station
on Chinese cable, CCTV 9, and this channel, other than the.......
really....... really...... slow..... news..... broadcast.... should be
renamed the "White Person in Some Strange Chinese Village Travel Network."
And what's with the no steamy extramarital sex? A jaded Chinese TV housewife
with nothing to do will just have to chat with her pool boy? What China
needs is an extramarital sex network. They could call it EMSN, the Worldwide
Leader in Infidelity. All day and all night, programming centered around
extramarital sex. In the morning, maybe a couple episodes of Temptation
Island followed by 6 hours of American soap operas and then a primetime
movie, maybe Unfaithful, Indecent Proposal or Match Point. The TV drama
deputy said that the government has already designated two groups to make
"secret inquiries" into explicit programming on Chinese TV. Um, secret
inquiries? Why don't they just hire a bunch of lazy asses sitting at home
all day? It's no coincidence that in a place with nothing on the tube, there
is a massive piracy problem.
