Chili Cook-Off Spices Up Shanghai
On Sunday afternoon, Bubba's Texas Style Bar-B-Que and Saloon in West Shanghai hosted the ultimate American event.  It was the first-ever Shanghai Chili Cook-Off Championship where Americans and Chinese alike (but mostly Americans) paid 100RMB to drink free-flowing beer and sample 20 different types of chili.  There was chili with beans, mesquite chili, sirloin chili and even chili served by men dressed as pirates.  Tasters mozied through Bubba's backyard and voted for the chili they liked the best.  The whole time, two guitarists played and sang classic American country tunes.  For a few hours on Sunday, Shanghai felt like America.  Inside Bubba's, college football played on the flat-screen televisions, families sat eating ribs and pulled pork sandwiches, and expats talked business over a beer.  The proceeds of the inaugural cook-off went to Shanghai Sunrise, a charity group that sponsors education for disadvantaged Shanghainese children.  Shanghai's western-style restaurant City Diner won both the People's Choice Award and the Judge's award for tastiest chili and the Bevo Longhorn Chili chefs won "Best Theme" for their Texas Longhorn theme.  Not coincidentally, Bubba's owner Ken Walker is a huge Longhorn fan.  By the end of the day, people were full, people were drunk and a significant amount of money was raised for a worthy cause.  Like the feeling you get from eating hot, spicy Chili on a cold fall day, Bubba's chili competition certainly hit the spot.
