A
south China man has applied for a trademark for a new line of sanitary pads
under the name of Shanghai basketball star Yao Ming. The brand would
only include the NBA star's name, not picture as the image to the left
would indicate. Lu Hao, a spokesman for Team Yao said of the brand,
"This kind of registration is obviously malicious. It's unbelievable that someone
could do such a thing. It's just too much." The cheap move to
capitalize off a famous name has become common in China of late as singer Ai
Dai filed suit to prevent a condom brand bearing her name from launching.
And in July, a Fujian man sought to start a contraceptive line called
"CCTV1", the name of China's government-run news channel. The Yao
brand, according to the China Daily, would not be limited to Maxi pads and
would include medicine and disposable underwear. I wonder if the
underwear would have Yao's face on it. Because nothing says sexy like
pulling down a girl's pants to find Yao Ming's face on a girl's crotch.
According to Chinese trademark law, the brand will undergo a three-month
approval period. A cool feature of the Yao pads would be that after
one has been used, it will match Yao's Houston Rockets' uniform.
