SADDAM SENTENCED TO DEATH:
IRAQI COURT GETS MEDIEVAL ON HUSSEIN
Sunday, Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was found guilty for crimes against humanity and was sentenced to death by hanging.  Wow.  Hanging.  Interesting choice.  I'm surprised the Iraqi court didn't go with a quartering or a good old fashioned stoning.  Hussein shouted "God is great" as the judge handed down his sentence.  If only God was his lawyer.  As bailiffs escorted Saddam from the courtroom, the dictator shouted, "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"  Though Hussein's 24-year reign was punctuated by violence and brutality, the specific event on which the tribunal focused was the 1982 mass execution of 148 men and children in the town of Dujail.  According to Iraqi judicial procedure, the death sentence will be automatically appealed and the appellate court has an unlimited amount of time to rule on Saddam's case.  The New York Times reported Sunday that some Iraqi officials believe Saddam could be executed in the spring.  And who doesn't love a spring hanging?  While the news of Saddam's death sentence brought about both celebrations and protests in Iraq, for me, it will be a bit poignant when the noose is fastened around his neck.  Since the first Gulf War, Hussein has become the object of so much hate and the butt of so many good jokes.  It seems like only yesterday that he invaded Kuwait.  Oopsy.  And remember that one time he fired scud missiles at Israel?  And who could forget when Saddam was found in the underground spider hole with the bum beard?  Oh Saddam.  However you feel about Saddam Hussein, the world will certainly be a different place without him.
