Top 10 Most Disappointing
Rock and Roll Offspring
I take Chinese lessons at my neighborhood Starbucks.
At Starbucks, as in America, they play music that they deem good
coffee-drinking music. A few months ago, it was only old standards-- Tony
Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and of course, Ray Charles. The last few
weeks I've had my lesson, I noticed they had modernized their music selection.
They got rid of the old stuff and decided to play only one CD over and over
again. Not my favorite CD, but also not something that offends me.
It is Norah Jones's "Come Away With Me." While this album was released
in 2002, apparently it has just been discovered in China. Not a big
surprise. So when I'm nodding at my Chinese teacher pretending to
listen to her, really I am thinking about Norah Jones
and making lists in my head. Top 5 favorite female singers (she
wouldn't make it), Top 5 Indian musicians (don't really know any others) and finally, most successful
musical offspring. Norah, daughter of Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar, would certainly make that list along with
people like Hank Williams Jr., Rufus Wainwright and the annoying as ever,
Enrique Iglesias. While I don't listen to these artists, you can't
argue with their success. There's a flip side to that coin. What
about all the other musical offspring that haven't achieved a fraction of
the success of their parent? Or what about those performers who are
good but their parent is so famous that a career in music, when compared to
the parent, can only be seen as a failure? Here is this week's
special:
