madaboutyou.jpgI used to write Top Ten lists. I learned these lists are pretty much the cheapest way to get people to click a link. Everyone loves a top ten list when the subject is interesting. When I heard that the president of Mensa International, the high IQ society, put out a list of the smartest television shows of all time, I had to click the link. I expected to find some intelligent and original programs. I was disappointed. Here is the list:

  • M*A*S*H
  • Cosmos (with Carl Sagan)
  • CSI
  • House
  • The West Wing
  • Boston Legal
  • All in the Family
  • Frasier
  • Mad About You
  • Jeopardy

How is Mad About You one of the smartest shows of all time? And how did The Twilight Zone, by far the smartest show of all time, get left off the list? House? I mean, the show’s smart, but no smarter than, say, Picket Fences or Lost. And what about Seinfeld? Seinfeld was on the same network and night as Mad About You for 7 years and was always more popular, more quoted and certainly much smarter. The only one I agree with is Jeopardy, and that’s a quiz show. A terrible list.

West Wing and Jeopardy make the list. I’m satisfied. Throw the Sopranos on there and the list is complete.

I’m sorry, but this is embarassing.

Can you change the title of this article? This list was *not* released by Mensa. It is the opinion of just one of it’s members.

(And yes, it is a terrible list.)

Ya, um, how about reading the article a bit more? The “MENSA List” came from a list of favorite shows by one member. One of this MENSA member’s favorite shows was “Ren & Stimpy”, and it reveled in it’s own stupidity.
